A look back at the past...
Κτίστηκε στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα επί οθωμανικής αυτοκρατορίας και λειτούργησε ως λέσχη Οθωμανών αξιωματικών, μέχρι που το 1912 το νησί κατελήφθη από Ιταλούς και έτσι το κτήριο άλλαξε χέρια. Ηχηρές προσωπικότητες της ιταλοκρατίας, όπως ο Mario Lago και ο De Vecchi έχουν συνδεθεί με το κτήριο, που πέρα από λέσχη Ιταλών πλέον αξιωματικών αποτελούσε κέντρο καλλιτεχνικών εκθέσεων και εκδηλώσεων.
Το 1943 το νησί καταλαμβάνεται από Γερμανούς κι έτσι το κτήριο εκτελεί για δύο χρόνια χρέη τελωνείου, ενώ αργότερα γίνεται λέσχη των συμμαχικών δυνάμεων. Με την αποχώρηση και των Άγγλων συμμάχων από τη Ρόδο, ο πλούσιος διάκοσμος του χώρου λεηλατείται και αποσπώνται έργα και αντικείμενα υψηλής καλλιτεχνικής αξίας.
H συνεχής εναλλαγή κατακτήσεων του νησιού είχε άμεσες συνέπειες όχι μόνο στην ιδιοκτησία του κτηρίου, αλλά και στη διαμόρφωση του χώρου του.
Το κτήριο δέχθηκε 4 δραστικές αλλοιώσεις ανά τα έτη από την πρωταρχική του μορφή, οι περισσότερες ιταλικού χαρακτήρα, διατηρώντας στοιχεία ανατολικής και ρωμαϊκής αρχιτεκτονικής.
Σήμερα, τα οξύκορφα σταυροθόλια, οι στοές, η απουσία εξωτερικού διάκοσμου, η αυστηρότητα των γραμμών και η γοτθική βαριά όψη συγκροτούν ένα κτήριο ιταλικού χαρακτήρα.
“Aktaion”
In 1946, the building, once inaccessible to the people of Rhodes, was named "Aktaion", which means the portion of land next to the sea, or the coastal area, and acquired the glamour and the position it still holds today for the local society of Rhodes. On this day there is a big celebration held on the grounds of "Aktaion" now bearing a Greek signature.
An imposing tree (Ficus Benjamin), a symbol of hope and change that marks the beginning of a new life for Rhodes, free and independent, adorns the courtyard of "Aktaion" to this day. This tree was planted on 31 March 1947, the day of our liberation, and since then the building has witnessed only positive developments and has become a point of reference for all events and celebrations planned at the center.
